Today, seizing the excuse of Christmas events, people from the laboratory in which I have my internship have gathered to have lunch and play some LAN games together. Thus, I’ve discovered two new online multiplayer free games (well, I did know Quake, but not this way) which are pretty cool, so I’ll share them here and add two I already knew from time ag o which are also very interesting.
They all are completely free, you have only to pay for extra goods as special clothes, pets and things like that, without what you can play perfectly and it’s same amusing.

Gunz – The Duel
This is maybe my favourite game among those I’m presenting today. It’s a TPS (Third person shooter) which combines guns and explosions with swordfight and Matrix style moves. It’s one of the most interesting mixtures I’ve ever seen in videogames. The pace of the play is quite quick, with unreal physics allowing you move fast through the levels, jump around everywhere, and much more interesting things like stop bullets with katanas, dodge them with flips and stunts, run on the walls or climb using daggers and swords. Weapons are also very diverse, wether it be handguns, machine guns, missile launchers or shotguns. Also, for those stylish players who find this not enough, you can use the small ones in pairs, using both hands to spray bullets all around to everyone in your way.
As I said, melee weapons are also included in the game, but players using them have the same opportunities of winning than those using guns (what usually doesn’t happen in shooters). Available weapons are swords, daggers and kodachis (which is a katana in each hand, which is much more stylish and fast). With swords and kodachis you can stop bullets just by pressing Shift (but you can’t cover your back or sides this way) and throw other players up in the air with a uprising attack (pressing left mouse button, after what the enemy will fall back on the ground, stunned ready to be fried by your guns)
Furthermore, probably one of the best things in the game, is its cooperative Quest mode. In them, you can gather a team up to 4 people in order to cooperate and defeat all the monsters appearing in the levels. This is still in development stage, but it already has a lot of levels, bosses and extra items.
Also, in the quests and fights you get money as you defeat players or monsters. You can use that money to buy new weapons and clothes (with higher armor attributes). Furthermore, the game has a levelling system with what you can improve your character as you keep playing, what increases a lot the possibilities and hours of amusement.

Silkroad
Silkroad is other game I was really addicted for a long time, but I’ve not played it for a couple of years. It’s a free MMORPG (Massively multiplayer online role-playing game) with a lot of players which is every bit as good as pay ones. The game has changed a lot in its different editions (Legends) but the basis stays the same. It’s atmosphere is focused on the ancient asia (the Silk Road indeed) and it offers very big scenarios, with a lot of customization options and a lot of amusement hours. In the game there are three kind of roles: Traders (who earn money by selling goods among cities), Thieves (who earn money by stealing Traders’ goods) and Guardians (who protect the traders against thieves in payment of a generous salary). Furthermore, there are a huge amount of other missions to fulfil for all the levels.
For those who like this kind of games, it’s highly recommended. It has improved a lot since its first versions, which were those I tried, so you’d better check yourself how cool it is.

Quake Live
What can I say about Quake that you don’t already know? And well, if you don’t know about Quake, you don’t deserve to use your computer anymore until you play it. The new and interesting thing of Quake Live is that you can play it completely for free, only needing a browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari) in any operating system.
You only have to download a plugin for your browser of choice, and in 10 minutes you’ll be playing with your friends this superb First Person Shooter. You have to create an account in the site, in which your friends, scores and customizations will be stored.
If you play it fullscreen, you won’t even feel the difference of being playing in the browser.

TrackMania
And last but not least, TracMania, a free online game for fans of racing games. I have to say that the full version (TrackMania United Forever) is not free, but there is another one with less contents which is free (TrackMania Nations Forever). With the free version you can play both alone and online (Through the Internet or LAN) in a huge amount of different tracks and game modes. The pay version has more tracks, customization options and offline modes, but the free one has enough contents and hours of fun.
It’s quite different from other racing games, as the physics of the game is not realistic but more appropriate of a game like Mario Kart. You can race in more-or-less-normal tracks, or in other impossible ones with loopings, impossible jumps, vertical roads… in which sometimes it’s really hard to reach the goal.
